Pittsburgh Geological Society

CODE  OF  Conduct

The mission of The Pittsburgh Geological Society (PGS) is to enhance the professional growth of all members and promote the geosciences.  To fulfill this mission, PGS offers monthly meetings, networking events, field trips, and workshops which are open to professional and student members (Members) and to non-members, including the public (Guests).  PGS is committed to providing a safe, educational, professional and welcoming environment for Members and Guests.  This Code of Conduct (Code) provides responsibilities and guiding principles of conduct for all Members, and including, but not limited to, speakers and Guests. This Code applies to all PGS meeting-related events, including those sponsored by other organizations but held in conjunction with PGS.

Statement of Responsibilities and Principles

Members are expected to adhere to the highest standards of conduct and to maintain personal and professional integrity. Members should observe the following responsibilities and principles in the conduct of their professional and student affairs.

Expected Behavior

Members will strive to communicate their knowledge of the geosciences to support educational opportunities for all Members and Guests. Members will communicate openly with respect for others, critiquing ideas rather than individuals.

Members will strive to accurately represent an understanding and knowledge of the geosciences, avoiding and discouraging the dissemination of erroneous, biased, or exaggerated statements.  Members will offer their professional advice and guidance only on those subjects in which they are informed and/or are qualified through professional training or experience.

Members will treat all other Members and Guests respectfully and without exploitation. Members should mentor and encourage all students in a manner that is open-minded, objective, and promotes curiosity, for the advancement of the student's learning and professional development.

Members will undertake reasonable efforts to ensure inclusiveness and will not discriminate against others based on race, sex, creed, age, sexual orientation, national origin, religion, and disability.

In publications, Members should strive to differentiate facts, opinions, and hypotheses. Members will not plagiarize in verbal or written communication, and will give full and proper credit to the creativity, ideas, and efforts of colleagues and students. Members will not fabricate, falsify, or suppress results, deliberately misrepresent research findings, or otherwise commit scientific fraud.

Members will not attempt to injure the reputation or professional opportunities of any other person by false, biased, or undocumented claims.

Unacceptable Behavior

Harassment, intimidation, or discrimination in any form will not be tolerated.  All defamatory, abusive, profane, threatening, offensive, or illegal behaviors are strictly prohibited.

Examples of unacceptable behavior include, but are not limited to, verbal comments related to gender, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, religion, national origin, inappropriate use of nudity and/or sexual images in public spaces or in presentations, or threatening or stalking any Member, Guest or service provider.

Reporting Unacceptable Behavior

A PGS Board member should be notified if unacceptable behavior occurs or if someone is observed to be in distress .

Anyone experiencing or witnessing behavior that constitutes an immediate or serious threat to any member of the society or public safety should contact 911.
